This method works best especially to liquid food products such as beverages. This method involves charging the packaging material using nitrogen or dry air set at a certain level of pressure. This pressure is then recorded and observed over a period of time. If the observations show that the pressure reduces over time, then definitely the packaging material is leaking. This method is preferred by many as it is compact, reliable, efficient, cheap and simple.
3. The Bubble Emission Method
This method is ideal for products that contain air. Ideally, most of the packaged food products normally contain sealed air and hence this method works for most of the food products. The method is simple and it involves immersing the packaging material in water and observing for the presence of bubbles. It is also a very simple and cheap method that can be done by anyone.
4. Ultrasonic Measurement Method
All leaks, irrespective of their size produce sounds which can either be of high or low frequency. Small leaks normally produce high frequency sound and therefore call for the use of an ultrasonic leak detector. These ultrasonic detectors are small hand held gadgets that have a sensitive adjustment nozzle, a meter and a pair of headphones. These detectors find the leaks in the food packaging materials and also measure the leak rate.
Identifying leaks prior to sending the food out there is a must for all manufacturers. This is because leaks can lead to losses as there will be a lot of defective products in the market. Also, the reputation of the company will be at risk if consumers complain.
